Abstract

A thixotropic pesticidal composition forming a substantially non-flocculated dilute dispersion when extended with water contains from about 10-65% by weight of a water-insoluble pesticide, e.g. water-insoluble herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, miticides, nematocides, bactericides, acaricides, and anthelmintics, rodenticides or rodent repellants, from about 0.1-10% by weight of a suspending agent, from 0.1-25% by weight of a dispersing agent, the total of the ingredients not exceeding 70% by weight of the composition, and at least 30% by weight of water, the suspending agent being in a swelled and de-agglomerated form in intimate admixture with the pesticide, the composition having the characteristics of a mobile homogeneous fluid when agitated. When an anthelmintic is used the composition may be used as a drench. Specified herbicides are 2,4-D and 2,4-T compounds, water-insoluble polychlorobenzoic acids, aryl aliphatic ureas represented by <FORM:0970579/A5-A6/1> where X is halogen; n is a cardinal number up to 3; R1 is methyl or ethyl; and R11 is hydrogen or alkyl or alkenyl of one to four carbon atoms; triazines of a general formula <FORM:0970579/A5-A6/2> where R1 and R2 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of alkyl of less than 4 carbons and -(CH2)n-OCH3; n is an integer selected from the group consisting of 2 and 3. Specified insecticides are 1,2,3,4,10,10 - hexachloro - 6,7 - epoxy - 1,4,4a,-5,6,7,8,8a - octahydro - 1,4,5,8 - dimethanonaphthalene (Dieldrin) and 1,2,3,4,10,10-hexachloro - 6,7 - epoxy - 1,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a - octahydro-1,4,5,8 - endo - endo - dimethanonaphthalene (Endrin); 1,1,1 - trichloro - 2,2 - bis(p - methoxy-phenyl)ethane; 1,1,1 - trichloro - 2,2 - di-(p-dichlorophenyl) ethane and related compounds, toxaphene, methoxcchlor(1,1,1 - trichloro - 2,2 - bis(p - methoxy - phenyl)ethane. Specified fungicides are tetra-alkyl thiuram disulphides, such as bis(dimethyl-thiocarbamyl) disulphide, and dithiocarbamates, such as manganese or zinc ethylenebisdithiocarbamate, and ferric, zinc, manganese and other heavy metal salts of dimethyldithiocarbamic acid, ethylmethyldithiocarbamic acid, n - butyldithiocarbamic acid and of other dithiocarbamic acids derived from primary and secondary amines, 3 - (p - chlorophenyl) - 5 - methylrhodanine, N - trichloromethylmercapto-4 - cyclo-hexane - 1, 2 - dicarboximide ("Captan") N - trichloromethylmercapthophthalimide ("Phaltan," Registered Trade Mark), ethyl mercury p - toluenesulphonanilide, N,N1-diphenyl - p - phenylenediamine, 2,3 - dichloro-1,4 - naphthoquinone, tetrachloro - p - benzoquinone, 2,4 - dichloro - 6 - (chloroanilino) - triazine and copper quinolinate and insoluble inorganic fungicides such as copper oxide, and copper oxychloride. Specified anthelmintic is phenothiazine. Specified suspending agents are water-swellable hydrous colloidal mineral silicates, e.g. bentonite, montmorillonite, beidellite, nontronite, hectorite, saponite, and sauconite, and attapulgite, polycarboxylated hydrogen polymers in which the carboxyl group is in the form of the alkali metal, ammonium or amine salt. Typical of such polymers are the salts of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acids, which may contain minor amounts of conventional copolymers or polymer modifiers such as fumaric acid or other ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids or other modifiers conventional in the polymer art or minor amounts of cross-linking agents such as divinyl benzene. Additional ingredients such as the anti-foaming agents, corrosion inhibitors, dyes, pigments, preservatives, or other additives, e.g. methanol, ethylene glycol and other freezing point depressants can also be included. Specification 686,234 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,504,404, 2,655,444 and 2,655,447 are referred to.
