A rotary-spherical valve has a body formed by a tubular member 12 clamped between elements 10, each having inner and outer flanges 42, 38. The rotary valve-member 28, which is covered with a layer 30 of synthetic plastic material, except at the outer end of the integral stem 22, has a flat base part 24; opposite the stem gland 16 is a threaded boss 32 housing a plug 34 capped by a disc 35 of synthetic plastic material, whilst a plastic liner 36 is applied over the inner surface of the member 12 and gland 16. The inner body flanges 42, incorporate resilient-annular valve-seat rings 48 and sealing rings 50 for the member 12; the elements 10 are provided with plastic liners 52 which also extend over the rings 48, 50 and a resilient sealing ring 64 is located between the gland 16 and liner 36. The stem 22 has an operating handle 18 movable between stops. Vent holes 76, 78, 82 are situated behind the various plastic linings. The force applied to the rings 48 is adjusted through tie bars 14 between the flanges 42, and compression of the ring 64 is effected by tightening the gland ring 66; the plug 34 embodies a resilient disc 37 to prevent uneven sealing, between the valve base 24 and its seat 48; the disc 37, which also compensates for temperature changes, may be replaced by a coilspring or spring washer. The synthetic plastic material used, which is self-lubricating and corrosion resistant, may be polytetrafluoroethylene, or copolymers of tetrafluoroethylene with unsaturated organic compounds such as ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene, and copolymers of the latter; other materials, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene or vinyl polymers such as polyvinyl chloride may also be employed.
