Abstract

970,388. Television. AGFA A.G. Nov. 22, 1960 [Nov. 26, 1959], No. 40181/60. Addition to 902,384. Heading H4F. In a light valve which controls light by the variation of refractive index of a medium at a control surface by means of control signals, the control surface consists of a plurality of sections inclined to the direction of incidence of the light, the sections being arranged upon a surface that is substantially perpendicular to the exit direction of the controlled light. In one embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), and Fig. 2, light from a sourle 14 passes via a lens 15 to the light valve, a section of this being illustrated. The valve comprises a medium 1, e.g. glass, having a sawtooth profile, the sawtooth surrface 10, 11 having electrodes arranged thereon. Application of a potential to these electrodes produces a variation in the refractive index of the medium 9 so that the percentage of light transmitted by the surface 10 also varies. The reflected portion of the incident light is absorbed at surface 11. If the length of each sawtooth is divided up into a plurality of sections, each section being insulated from its neighbour, each section may be energized in turn to provide a mosaic, or raster. By this means the invention may be used as an image converter or projection television screen. Further embodiments of the light valve are described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
