970,256. Indicating liquid levels. MONITOR PATENT SAFETY DEVICES Ltd. April 2, 1963 [Jan. 25, 1962], No. 2855/62. Headings G1H and G1N. A liquid level gauge of the type including a float mounted on an angularly displaceable arm 13 connected to the rotary element of an arcuate potentiometer 20, is provided with a casing having a recess 8 in which is housed a spindle 12 for the arm, a bearing 18 for the spindle being fluid-tightly sealed through a wall of the recess, and means secured to the spindle outside the recess for actuating the potentiometer, at least one electrical switch 26 being actuated at a predetermined position of the arm. The spindle carries a gear-sector 22 which rotates a gear 24 mounted on the potentiometer shaft 21. Two switches 26 are preferably provided, one above and one below shaft 21. Separate arms 28 (only one shown) are provided for actuating the switches, the ends of the arms bearing on a cam 31 on spindle 12. Suitably spaced recesses in the cam cause the switches to operate at predetermined upper and lower limits. The two actuating arms may bear on separate cams so that the limits can be independently adjusted. The potentiometer is connected to one or more indicators, and the switches are connected to bells, horns, or steady or flashing lights. The switches may also control liquid supply or extraction pumps or valves. The switch actuating cam may be mounted on the potentiometer shaft. Gauges associated with several tanks may be connected to a single indicator through a selector switch.
