Abstract

Aqueous dispersions are stabilized with an agent comprising a water-soluble salt of a synthetic copolymer of a half-ester of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with an ethylenic hydrocarbon which copolymer has an intrinsic viscosity in acetone between 0.01 and 0.1. The half-ester may be a C1- 12 alkyl or an aralkyl ester of maleic, fumaric, citraconic, mesaconic, itaconic or glutaconic acid; ortho hydrocarbon may be ethylene, propylene, butylene, styrene, alpha-methylstyrene or vinyl toluene; and the salt may be an alkali metal, ammonium or amine salt. It is stated that polymers of the specified intrinsic viscosity result from slow mass polymerization at temperatures not above 120 DEG C. in the presence of a chain modifier which may be an amine, Schiff's base, nitro-compound, hydrazine, diazoamino-compound, haloalkane, thiuram or xanthic disulphide, or a mercaptan, thioglycollic acid or an ester thereof, or sulphur, selenium or phosphine. In specific examples monobutyl maleate is copolymerized with styrene using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst, in Example 1 alone and in Example 2 with di-t-butyl peroxide, the modifier being beta-nitrostyrene in Example 1 and t-dodecylmercaptan in Example 2. Both polymers are converted to the sodium salt. The copolymer salts are used in amounts of 0.1 to 5% by weight of solids to stabilize dispersions of pigments in paints or polymer latices e.g. of natural rubber or of a polymer or copolymer of isoprene, butadiene, isobutylene, styrene and acrylonitrile. The examples illustrate the stabilization of a styrene-butadiene copolymer latex. Specification 929,239 is referred to.
