Abstract
968, 932. Photographic flash guns. EASTMAN KODAK CO. June 13, 1963 [June 14, 1962], No. 22844/62. Heading G2A. A photographic flash gun comprises a flashlamp holder connectable to a source, of energization, a switching device in circuit with the holder and source of energization, and a photo-electric device adapted to be illuminated by field light which controls the switching device. As shown, a camera has an optical axis 10 on which are located aperture 12 and shutter blade 14, the blade being actuated by lever 16. A flash bulb 20 mounted in front of reflector 22 is in series with a battery 24, a switch 26, a shutter timing switch 28, and a gated switch 30. The switch 30 may be a silicon rectifier having a gating input 32. A resistor 34 and light dependent resistor 36, e.g., a cadmium sulphide cell is in parallel with bulb 20. Switch 26 is closed by actuation of lever 16 which actuates the shutter which in turn closes switch 28. Should the scene brightness be sufficiently high the resistance of cell 36 is low and switch 30 is non-conducting, thus preventing current flow through the bulb 20 and flash operation. If the scene brightness is low, the resistance of cell 36 is high, such that switch 30 is conducting, thereby permitting current flow through flash bulb 20. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, not shown, a rheostat 44 replaces resistor 34, Fig. 2., and may be adjusted according to a scale 45 of exposure factors.
