968,489. Treatment of plants; glass-house units. C. E. JONES. May 14, 1963, No. 19139/63. Heading A1E. To facilitate control of the conditions of lighting and heating to which plants are subjected, the plants are housed in a glasshouse unit comprising a base tray 10 at the centre of which is vertically mounted a rotatable member 18 carrying one or more hubs 25 having means 33, 34 for supporting plant holders, means being provided to rotate the member 18. Adjacent member 18 is a cylinder 41 in which slides a piston carried by a rod 44 to which is secured a pawl co-operating with a ratchet 46 at the base of member 18. Water is admitted to the closed end of cylinder 41 through a conduit 47 which also extends to a stop valve 49 controlled by a toggle arm 51 an end of which is connected to rod 44 so that when rod 44 is retracted arm 51 closes valve 49. Pressure therefore builds up in cylinder 41 forcing the piston and rod outwardly so that the pawl engages ratchet 46 to rotate the vertical member 18. When the arm 51 passes over centre it is pulled away from valve 49 and water escapes through drain 50. A spring 57 draws the rod back into the cylinder. Rotation may also be effected by wind, an electric motor or petrol engine and may be controlled by time switches or heat or light sensitive elements. A water spray pipe 58 and an artificial lighting and heating element 59 are provided. The unit may be placed in a conventional glass-house or patio or may be enclosed with walls and roof to form a complete glass-house. As shown in Fig. 1, the base 10 is hexagonal and is provided with corner posts 62 which support wall panels 65 of glass and/or plywood. A fibre glass roof 67 and air inlets 68, 70 are provided. Sun blinds or shades may also be provided.
