Abstract
Polyurethanes are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate with the product formed by reacting a polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric phenol and a polyhydric alcohol in presence of a catalyst. The polyglycidyl ether may be derived from bisphenol A, resorcinol, hydroquinone, 4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl, or bis (hydroxyphenyl) methane. Suitable polyhydric alcohols are aliphatic diols or triols, alkylene oxide polymers and copolymers and products prepared by polymerizing materials such as epichlorhydrin (see Specification 960,009). Reaction may be in an organic solvent (e.g. benzene) at -10 DEG to 50 DEG C. Preferred catalysts are acidic, e.g. boron trifluoride, sulphuric or phosphoric acid, stannic chloride, aluminium trichloride, titanium tetrachloride, aluminium alkyls, boron alkyls, or Friedel Craft catalysts. Examples 1-4 describe the production of intermediates from the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and (1) polypropylene glycol (average mol. wt. 400) and boron trifluoride ethrate in benzene. (2) polypropylene glycol (av. mol. wt. 2000), (3) dipropylene glycol, (4) polypropylene glycol (av. mol. wt. 2,000) using sodium hydride as the catalyst. The polymeric products may be reacted with a polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate to form a prepolymer which, if it contains free isocyanate groups may be reacted with a compound with a plurality of active H atoms to form a polyurethane plastic; or, if it contains free active hydrogen atoms may be reacted with a polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate to form the polyurethane plastic. Alternatively, the polyurethane plastic can be formed directly from the polymeric intermediate, a polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate and a compound containing a plurality of active hydrogen atoms. The polyurethane plastics may be produced as rigid or resilient foams by conventional techniques. Example 5 describes the preparation of a flexible foam from the polymeric product of Example 4, toluene diisocyanate, water, triethylene diamine, silicone oil, and stannous octoate, the ingredients being mixed in a stirred mixing head and the foaming liquid cured in a mould. Specification 868,996 also is referred to.
