Abstract
968,041. Monitoring tyre pressures. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 15, 1963 [Jan. 22, 1962], No. 2236/62. Heading B7C. A device 5, responsive to tyre pressure, controls contacts 6 in a circuit comprising coils 4, 7 and non-linear impedance 8 mounted on a rotating vehicle wheel. Electrical oscillations supplied by oscillators 2, 3 on the vehicle chassis (Fig. 1) are transmitted by electromagnetic coupling from stationary coil 1 to moving coil 4 when the coils are adjacent and, if contacts 6 are closed by an excessively low tyre pressure, the impedance 8 generates oscillations, of different frequency from those supplied, which are transmitted by electromagnetic coupling from coil 7 to stationary coil 9 and then through filter 10, amplifier 11 to actuate a detector 12, which gives visual or audible warning in the driving cab and may reduce the speed of the vehicle. In Fig. 1 oscillators 2, 3 supply two different frequencies (30, 40 kc./s.) which are heterodyned by the crystal diode 8 to produce a frequency (70 kc./s.) which filter 11 is tuned to pass. Coils 1, 9 and 4, 7 may be mounted adjacently on chassis and wheel, so that coils 1, 4 and 7, 9 couple at the same time during the wheel's rotation. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates an arrangement with only one coil each on chassis and wheel, to couple oscillations in both directions. The non-linear impedance may act as a frequency multiplier instead of a mixer, in which case only one oscillator is needed. On a vehicle, the oscillators, filter, amplifier and detector may be common to several wheels each having the coils, diode &c.
