A pedestrian traffic signal comprises an upper panel 14, preferably being arranged to show a red "WAIT" sign, a lower panel 15, preferably being arranged to show a green "CROSS" sign, and a series of discrete intermediate areas 16-20 to be illuminated separately in green when it is safe for a pedestrian to cross. When a change in direction of traffic is impending the " CROSS" panel is extinguished and the intermediate areas are successively extinguished to warn pedestrians that the time available for crossing is expiring. The "WAIT" and "CROSS" panels may be interchanged. Specification 874,879 is referred to.
