Abstract

967,581. Measuring displacement electrically. JOHN WYETH & BROTHER Ltd. Dec. 30, 1960 [Sept. 30, 1959], No. 33211/59. Heading G1N. A transducer for measuring displacement controls the resonant frequency of a tuned circuit incorporated in a phase discriminator whose output voltage is therefore indicative of the magnitude and direction of the displacement. As shown (Fig. 1), the phase discriminator comprises two diodes 6, 7 whose cathodes are fed with A.C. from an oscillating valve 2, and whose anodes are fed with the vector sum of the voltage obtained through the coupling between tuned circuit 3 in the anode of valve 2 and tuned circuit 4, 5, and the voltage developed across resistor 10. Initially the diodes 6, 7 produce equal and opposite voltages across resistors 8b, 9b, giving zero indication on meter 16. The resonant frequency of tuned circuit 4, 5 is modified by a coupling coil 12 connected to an inductor 14 and capacitor 15 whose capacitance is changed by the displacement, whereby a resultant output voltage is produced across resistors 8b, 9b indicative of the change in capacitor 15, and therefore of the displacement. The displacement can be made to vary the inductance or the resistance of the external circuit 14, 15.
