966,828. Determining pour points. STANDARD OIL CO. Feb. 4,1963, No. 4513/63. Heading G1S. The pour-point of a liquid (i.e. the lowest temperature at which the liquid will flow under its own weight) is determined by placing the liquid 11 in a container 12 which is rocked by a motor 13, a cam 14 and an arm 15 and is housed in a cooling bath 10. While the liquid 11 is above the pourpoint temperature its surface remains horizontal despite the rocking motion. As soon as the pourpoint is reached the surface is moved from the horizontal. This is detected by a light sensitive surface 18 which, while the surface was horizontal received a beam of electromagnetic radiation reflected from the surface of the liquid. The temperature of the liquid under test is detected by a member 16 and shown on a recorder 20.
