Abstract

1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenylindane and its homologues are prepared by dimerizing alpha-methyl styrene and/or nuclear alkyl derivatives thereof in the presence of 1-10% by weight based on the styrene of a catalyst which is an acid activated montmorillonite clay optionally containing 5-25% by weight of sulphuric acid or a synthetic silica-alumina containing 7-15% by weight of alumina at 100-200 DEG C. The nuclear alkyl substituent may be m-methyl, p-methyl, p-ethyl, m-isopropyl or p-propyl. Continuous processes may be effected by passing the reactants downwardly through a fixed bed of catalyst. A solvent may be present, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene or product. Novel dimerized products obtained from reaction mixtures of 50-90% mol. alpha-methyl styrene with 50-10% of alkylated alphamethyl styrene containing mixtures of the respective dimers and the codimer are useful as lubricants and heat transfer fluids and are resistant to radiations from atomic reactors.
