Abstract

966,787. Filters for liquids. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 6, 1962 [April 26, 1961 (2)], No. 13324/62. Heading B1D. [Also in Division D1] Several filters with removable throw-away filter elements containing sorption and filtration materials are described for cleaning the solvent in a dry-cleaning machine. Fig. 5 shows, in a canister 118, a filter element 130 consisting of three containers 138, 140, 142 having annular cross-sections and perforated walls, through which the solvent passes in turn. The filter element 130 is pressed by a spring 134 bearing against the lid 122 of the canister 118, to seal the junction 136 of the element 130 with the outlet from the canister. The containers 138, 142 contain 50% sisal and 50% felt for filtration. The container 140 contains carbon for sorption. Fig. 10 (not shown) depicts a similar filter having one annular container 172 in which the filtering materials are arranged in adjacent annular layers 174, 176, 178 one within another and coaxial with the container, and through which the solvent passes radially. Figs. 12, 13, 15 (13 and 15 not shown) show, inside a container 344, a pleated filter element 380 supported on a perforated screen 362 which is supported on shoulders 363 on endplates 358, 360. Solvent enters the filter through a distribution header 386. At high flow-rates, some solvent overflows through holes 364 in the end plates 358, 360, thereby by-passing the filter element 380. The element 380 may consist of a sandwich of sorbing materials (possible materials listed) between sheets of porous paper. Figs. 16, 17 (17 not shown) show a similar filter in which the pleated filter element 413 with the edges of its pleats vertical is bent round to be continuous with itself, and is supported against a perforated screen 416. The solvent enters through a central hole 420 in the base of the filter container 412, and passes through the filter element 413 to leave the container 412 via an outlet port in its side wall, except at high flow rates when solvent overflows the top of the element 413, thereby by-passing it.
