Abstract
966,725. Cold separation of gas mixtures. LEUNA-WERKE WALTER ULBRICHT VEB. May 15, 1963, No. 19323/63. Heading F4P. In a process for separating the residual gases of an ammonia synthesis process into crude liquid argon which is discharged from the separating column 6 through a line 15, liquid methane containing krypton and xenon through a line 18, crude gaseous argon, nitrogen gas containing a trace of argon and a mixture of hydrogen and methane through lines 14, 13, 8, respectively, the cold requirements are met in part by expansion with external work of a portion of feed gas in an engine 3 after cooling in an exchanger 1 traversed by reverse flowing gaseous products and in part by an auxiliary refrigeration cycle, e.g. nitrogen, forced by a compressor 32 through exchangers 25, 23 cooled in part by a reverse flow of a portion of compressed nitrogen after expansion in an engine 37 and in part by liquid methane withdrawn from column 6 through line 22. The hydrogen-nitrogen mixture leaving exchanger 5 is cooled by expansion in an engine 10 and is recirculated through the exchanger.
