Abstract
Random copolyesters contain the residues of terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid and bis-phenols of formula: <FORM:0966483/C3/1> in which R and R1 are alkyl, alkenyl, alkaryl or aryl radicals or hydrogen or in which R and R1 may together form a cycloaliphatic ring and BETA is hydrogen, chlorine or C1-C4 alkyl; the bis-phenol terephthalate units comprising from 10-40% or 60-90% of the sum of the bis-phenol terephthalate and bis-phenol isophthalate units. The copolyesters may be made by reacting the acid chlorides of terephthalic and isophthalic acids with the bis-phenol whilst removing hydrogen chloride from the mixture, e.g. in a current of an inert gas. Reaction may be effected in the presence of a solvent, e.g. dichloroethyl benzene. After the reaction the polyester may be precipitated from the mixture by adding toluene. Some of the copolyesters are soluble in chloroform, ethylene dichloride, trichloroethane, chlorobenzene, benzene, cyclohexanone, dioxane and tetrahydrofuran. Uses: films, fibres, moulded articles and coating compositions.
