Abstract

In concurrently separating CS2 and H2S from air, e.g. the effluent from viscose processing plants, by passing said air through active carbon and then regenerating the carbon with steam (to remove CS2) and by extraction with CS2 (to remove S formed by oxidation of H2S) there is added to the impure air an amount of ammonia less than 0.02% by volume thereof. Where there is a lower content of H2S than CS2, and since the S is formed in a small zone of the active carbon, the carbon may be regenerated with respect to CS2 a number of times, e.g. up to 20 times, before regenerating with respect to sulphur. Fig. 1 shows a system adapted for cyclic operation of the process in several beds of active carbon. Contaminated air from line 12 is mixed with ammonia introduced at 14 and passed upwardly through bed 1. In bed 2, CS2 is stripped from absorbent by first flushing with an inert gas to remove air and then passing in steam: the hot vapours are passed through a heating coil 23 to vaporize a solution of sulphur in CS2 obtained from a subsequent bed, cooled (coolers 25 and 26) and the water and CS2 separated. The latter is employed subsequently to extract sulphur in <PICT:0966404/C1/1> S by means of recovered CS2 from reservoir 10; the CS2 may be introduced by means of an intermediate baffle only over the lower zone of the activated carbon. Sulphur is recovered from the extracted solution by passing into vaporizer 6 in which the CS2 is evaporated whilst the sulphur passes to melting apparatus 7 which is indirectly steam-heated. In bed 5, bed 4. In bed 3 warm air or an inert gas from line 32 and heater 31 dries and cools the bed, which may then be re-employed for purification of air. Bed 4 is undergoing extraction of CS2 used for extraction is removed as in bed 2 and thereafter the bed is dried similarly to bed 3. In Fig. 2 (not shown), heat from the vapours emerging from bed 2 is conveyed to the vaporizer 9 by means of a heat-exchanger liquid circulating between heater 23 and an exchanger in line 22. The vapours pass from the exchanger to cooler 26.
