Abstract

At least one of the aluminium electrodes of an electrolytic capacitor has a first, dense, anodic oxide layer overlying its surface with a second porous anodic dielectric layer overlying the first and impregnated with a semi-conducting material having a resistivity between 5 x 105 and 3 x 107 ohm/cm. The double coating may be applied to one or more usually both aluminium electrode foils, and is formed by first anodizing the aluminium in a relatively strong acid e.g. oxalic, phosphoric, chromic or sulphuric in which the anodic film is somewhat soluble, so that a porous film is deposited, then anodizing in a weak acid such as boric to build up the dense film underneath the porous one. The Specification lists suitable semi-conducting liquids which may be used for impregnating the porous oxide; these include various polyhydric alcohols, sometimes with acid additives to affect the resistivity characteristics, and it is also possible to use hot polyethylene glycol which solidifies at room temperature. The completed capacitors may be of the wound form using two foils treated as described, or one such electrode may be held as an anode within a container of silver, copper, tantalum, aluminium, lead or other suitable material acting as cathode.
