Abstract

966,114. Variable speed control; linkwork. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. June 6, 1961 [July 11, 1960], No. 20393/61. Addition to 940,204. Headings F2C, F2D and F2K. In an automatic control, for a continuouslyvariable-speed gear in a vehicle, of the parent Specification, wherein the ratio is determined by fluid pressure regulated, from a higher feed pressure, through a pressure-reducing regulator 125, a spring 105 balancing the regulated pressure is subjected to a thrust varied by a vehicle-speed responsive means 42 and transmits its thrust to the regulator piston 115 through a first order single (Fig. 3, not shown) or, as shown, a double lever system, the mechanical advantage of which is varied by a Watt straightline motion system adjustable in response to other parameters such as engine load. The regulator 125 comprises a bored piston 115 sliding in a cylinder fed by pressure fluid through a port 18 and discharging through a port 19 and a regulated pressure chamber 128 connected to the ratio determining servomotor by a line 12. The vehicle speed responsive means shown comprises centrifugal balls between an axially fixed concave plate 40 rotated by a pulley 37 driven at vehicle wheel speed and a rotationally fixed but axially slidable concave plate 41 acting on one end of the spring 105, the other end of which acts on a plunger 106. As shown, the plunger 106 acts on the piston 115 through a lever 108, balls 116 carried by a centre link 118 of the Watt system, and a lever 111. The link 118 is carried by arms of bell-crank levers 122 connected to inlet manifold depression responsive means or, as shown, to the accelerator pedal 135 and 121 which, to obtain a lower gear for engine braking, is connected to a hand lever 45 and, through a spring 52, to the usual service brake pedal 49. A spring 142 returns the link 118, and balls 116, towards a high gear position.
