Abstract
The invention comprises acrylic methacrylic anhydride CH2=CHCO.O.CO.C(CH3)=CH2 and its production by reacting a methacrylyl halide with an alkali metal acrylate or an acrylyl halide with an alkali metal methacrylate, e.g. in an organic solvent. A polymerization inhibitor is preferably present. The anhydride may be polymerized (see Division C3).ALSO:The invention comprises polymers of formula: <FORM:0965963/C3/1> and <FORM:0965963/C3/2> and salts of the latter. The former polymers are obtained by polymerizing acrylic methacrylic anhydride (see Division C2), e.g. in the presence of heat, ultra-violet light or a free-radical catalyst. Suitable solvents and catalysts are specified. The latter polymers are obtained by hydrolysis of the former, e.g. by heating with water, or by aqueous alkaline hydrolysis to give a salt; acidification then gives the acid polymer. The anhydride polymers can be moulded into sheets and articles by injection moulding.ALSO:Metallic articles can be coated by brushing with or dipping in a solution of poly(acrylicmethacrylic anhydride) (see Division C3) in a solvent such as dimethyl formamide or dimethyl sulphoxide, and heating the article to dry the coating. The above polymer also adheres to glass.ALSO:Poly(acrylic methacrylic acid) of formula <FORM:0965963/D1-D2/1> (see Division C3) is useful in forming a warp size for nylon.
