Abstract
A "crystalline fraction" (defined as alkali metal salts of sulphuric acid secondary alkyl esters in which at least 90% of the molecules have entrenched alkyl groups containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms inclusive and the sulphate group is attached to the second carbon atom of the alkyl chain) is separated from an aqueous mixture of alkali metal monoalkyl sulphates formed by sulphating olefins by adding to this mixture a monohydric aliphatic alcohol that has a boiling point exceeding 100 DEG C. and is liquid and immiscible with water at 20 DEG C., allowing the resultant mixture to settle to an aqueous layer and an alcoholic layer, separating the alcoholic layer, distilling water from the alcoholic layer to leave a substantially water-free alcoholic solution, cooling the solution to crystallise the fraction and isolating the resultant crystals. Specified alcohols are methyl isobutyl carbinol, 1-hexanol and oxo-alcohols. In the examples, methyl isobutyl carbinol is added at 60 DEG C. to a solution of sodium alkyl sulphates and, after settling, the alcoholic layer is distilled leaving 0.2% water. Acetone is added before or after cooling to help crystallisation. On cooling, the crystalline mass is filtered or centrifuged leaving the "crystalline fraction". Specification 858,500 is referred to.
