The passage of a motor vehicle over reflective and/or refractive elements spaced a known distance apart is detected photo-electrically and recorded on a moving paper strip together with electronically generated timing signals and with further signals indicative of the instant of a function of control members such as clutch and brake. Details of transistored circuits for amplifying light pulses received by the photo-electric detectors (carried by the vehicle),for generating the timing signals and for the operation of printing heads and paper drive mechanism in the recording device are given. Figs. 6,7 and 8 show details of the recording device which comprises printing levers 114, operated by electromagnets 117,and acting through a slot (not shown) in a plate 107, against which a spring 106 presses the recording medium comprising a paper strip 101, to force the latter into contact with an ink roller 112 and so produce the required record. The strip 101 is driven via idler rollers 104,105, between a friction braked supply roll 102 and a take-up roll 111 by means of a (needle) toothed driving roller 110 which is itself driven by a motor 127 of one of two speeds depending on the positions of a lever 132 in a speed change mechanism (see Fig. 8,) having an input shaft 129 driven by motor 127 and an output shaft 138 which drives roller 110. The take-up roll 111 is driven by a pulley 125 via a friction belt 126 and pulley 124 the latter being driven by a gear 123 (see Fig. 8,) in a speed reduction arrangement the input shaft 190 of which is driven by motor 119 and the intermediate gear 121 of which drives the ink roller 112 the latter receiving its ink supply from an inking pad 113.
