A system comprising a high pressure mercury vapour lamp X is provided with a thermostat T in the lamp starting circuit, the thermostat being sensitive to the lamp temperature to open its contacts when the lamp is above a predetermined temperature thereby inhibiting attempts to start the lamp when its temperature is above this predetermined temperature.
