Abstract
Protein derivatives suitable for human administration are produced by reacting a protein extract of an animal gland or organ or a hydrolysis product of such a protein extract with an organic acid containing less than 6 carbon atoms or with the anhydride or chloride of such an organic acid or an inorganic acid under such conditions that at least one of the amino groups present in the starting material is blocked. The protein extract may be an extract from the spleen, pancreas, liver or thyroid or may be a cerebro-medullary extract and the reactant may be formic or acetic acid, acetic, phosphoric or succinic anhydride, or acetyl or formyl chloride. The process can also be applied to peptones such as meat peptone. The products may be administered orally or parentally either as free acid or as a salt with an organic or inorganic base such as lysine or calcium.
