In a thermally controlled steam trap or other device actuated by a column of bimetallic plates 5 arranged in pairs, with the plates of each pair doming outwardly away from one another, the pairs of plates are separated by distance members 7 which are either cup, leaf or other shaped springs or else are formed by bimetallic members which are flat when cold and form spring elements only when warmed. The distance members 7 may have bent up portions to limit their bending action.
