Abstract

964,815. Angular accelerometers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Jan. 29, 1963 [Dec. 29, 1961],No. 46776/61. Heading G1N. An angular accelerometer comprises a transducer member 1 rotatable about an axis and having two portions 2, 3 elastically coupled so that angular acceleration about the axis causes relative deflection between the portions, the portions having secured thereto electrical conducting members 4, 8 forming opposite plates of a capacitor C whose capacitance is indicative of the angular acceleration, and means for indicating the change in capacitance. The transducer consists of a single brass stamping with concentric rings 2,3 joined by webs 4, 5, 6. The inner ring is fastened to a shaft and is also rigidly attached to a base 7 carrying electrical components, which are encapsulated in epoxy resin, and batteries, which are encapsulated in fibre glass. Capacitor C forms with inductor L1 a tuned circuit in the collector circuit of transistor T1 whose emitter load consists of a resistor R1 and H.F. choke L2. Feedback is provided through a capacitor C2. A signal whose frequency is determined by C is radiated by aerial A extending through a hole in ring 3. A receiver consists of a conventional f.m. radio receiver without automatic frequency control of its local oscillator. Its output is fed to the Y-plate of an oscilloscope and the spot is continuously recorded on a film moving in the X-direction. A valve voltmeter may give a numerical indication. Short or open circuits may be detected by connecting a current indicator in place of fuse F.
