In an internally-heated saltpetre tank furnace electrical heating tubes 1 enter the end of the tank and descend obliquely towards a side wall 4, thence extending parallel in spaced relationship along the wall, each tube being offset towards the centre of the tank in relation to the tube immediately above. Circulation of the saltpetre melt is thus ensured, and there is no overheating of the slurry which settles on the tank floor 6 and can be removed while the furnace is in operation. The temperature may be accurately adjusted by switching the heating tubes on and off in groups of two or individually under the control of a compensating regulator or photo-cell.
