Abstract
964,302. Cutting webs. SJOSTROM AUTOMATIONS Inc. July 10, 1962 [July 10, 1961], No. 26531/62. Heading B4B. A machine for cutting towels from a web 6 of towelling material which is formed at intervals within thin transverse bands adapted to constitute the selvedge ends of the individual towels comprises a pair of straightening rolls 33, 34 which are positioned between forward feed rolls 7, 8 for the web, and means 90 arranged forwardly of such rolls for tensioning the web and serving the purpose of aligning each of the thin bands when under a cutter 60 so that the latter may accurately cut centrally of the band. The web, which is led between transverse tension bars 4 disposed at the upper end of an inclined frame 2, is advanced downwardly along the frame by feed rolls 7, 8 on the main frame 1 and then, after passing over steel plates 31, 32, is successively fed between the straightener rolls 33, 34, under the cutter 60 and on to a belt conveyer 84 driven continuously by a motor 86. The feed roll 7 is rotated by a motor 20 and the roll 8 is arranged to be swung upwardly when it is desired to thread a web into the machine. The straightening rolls 33, 34 are independently driven in directions opposite to those of the corresponding rolls 7, 8 and, whenever they are required to effect a straightening action, the upper roll 34 is swung down from its normal inoperative position by the operation of a solenoid 42. Both rolls are carried by the plate 32 which is adjustable to and from the rolls 7, 8 by a screwed shaft 46. The cutter 60 is pivoted at one end for swinging movement across the web by a pressure cylinder 66 acting through an arm 63 connected to the opposite end of the cutter. A bar 67 guides the cutter in its movement and an air blast from pipes 71 lifts the leading edge of the web over the counterblade 70. Automatic straightening and cutting cycles are effected under the control of a switch 14 which is mounted in the inclined frame 2 for adjustment longitudinally of the web and is so positioned that, when one thin band has completely passed through the then inoperative rolls 33, 34 and is disposed in the cutting zone with the leading edge of the web located on the conveyer 84 under a verticallymovable transverse bar 90 adjacent the cutter, it is actuated by the next thin band in the web to start a cycle. The feed motor 20 is then stopped and solenoids 42, 91 are actuated to, respectively, swing the roll 34 into operative position and lower the bar 90 on to the web on the conveyer. The rearwardly-rotating rolls 33, 34, which then engage a thick portion of the web while the forward end of the web is held by the bar 90, back up the web until the rear edge of the thin band is in straightened position under the rolls. At this time, the control circuit provides for actuation of the cylinder 66 to lower the blade 60 and so cut the web. As the cutter completes a cut it actuates a limit switch to restore the machine to its previous condition. A pressure cylinder 103 is also actuated to advance a carriage 100 so that a roller 105 on the carriage receives a severed towel from the conveyer 84 and drops it on to a table 106.
