Abstract
964,084. Direct-contact heat-exchanges between gases and liquids. E. L. M. FRANCIS. (R. Katz, W. H. Nebeng, and B. Anik). July 19, 1960, No. 25193/60. Heading F4K. [Also in Division B1] Heat exchange apparatus wherein a gas is contacted with a liquid comprises a casing with a gas inlet 19 and an outlet 20, a rotor 1 mounted for rotation within the casing and made up from involute-shaped vanes 8 fanning outwardly from a central hollow core and forming between them passages 9 of constant cross-sectional area open at each end but closed at the sides by annular plates 10 and 11, and liquid supply means 12 located within the hollow core. In use, the rate of liquid supply and the speed of rotation is such that liquid is passed by centrifugal force as a film on the boundary surfaces of the passages to contact the gas flowing from the periphery of the rotor to the hollow core. The vanes may be spaced apart by corrugations 24 and secured to'the plates 10 and 11 by flanges or by welding. The outer ends of the passages may be flared as shown in Fig. 1.
