[Also in Division F2] A brake mechanism for co-operation with a pair of rotatable reeling devices 10, 11 e.g. used particularly for handling magnetic record tapes comprises a pair of brake members 25, 26 and a bar 31 interconnectingthe brake members and arranged for simultaneously expanding one of the brake members and contracting the other brake member for providing differential braking when the brake members are applied in a braking engagement. As shown the brake members 25, 26 comprise strip spring members having linings 34, 35 which are attached to the ends of the bar 31 and to blocks 29, 30 and have angular bends 27, 28 formed therein. De-energization of a rotary solenoid 44 allows the springs 40, 41, whose tension may be adjusted by screws 49 in brackets 48, to apply the brake members 34, 35 to drums 14, 15. The angular bends 27, 28 may be replaced by helical springs.
