Abstract
963,407. Grinding; turning; machine-tool details. LENTILLES OPHTHALMIQUES RATIONELLES S.A. Feb. 22, 1962 [March 22, 1961], No. 7009/62. Headings B3B, B3D and B3T. A process for the production of a toric surface on a body of resilient material, such as in the production of a contact lens, comprises forming a surface of revolution on the body, compressing the body between two opposed forces acting at right angles to the axis of revolution of the surface, machining the surface so deformed in such a manner that it again becomes a surface of revolution, and finally releasing the compressive forces. The lens 40 may be of the form shown in Fig. 1 in which the surface of revolution is a spheroidal cap and deformation is effected by compression along a base circle diameter. The flanged base 39 of the lens is gripped by the upstanding portions 29 of four L-shaped jaws 27 which are slidably mounted in bores in a holding element 20 and urged inwardly against the action of outwardly-acting springs 31 by the rotation of the element 20 in a surrounding housing 1 having an oval bore 6, Fig. 2, constituted by two circular arcs of radius R with centres O displaced a distance d as shown. Depressions 28 in the base of the element 20 enable it to be rotated to position the jaws so as to provide the desired degree of deformation of the lens. When suitably deformed, the lens is turned or ground, and polished. In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the lens 60 is mounted in the lower end of a bore 57 in a vertically-movable support plate 55 and compression of the lens is effected by causing a slide 67 to urge the lens against an oppositelydisposed straight edge 64 on the support; the slide 67 is operated from a screw 57 whose tapered face 74 contacts a peg 68 on the slide. Upon suitable deformation of the lens the support 55 is lowered so as to bring the lens into contact with melted wax in a cup 53, and the subsequent machining operation is carried out when the wax has hardened.
