Abstract

962,995. Air cushion vehicles. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Jan. 11, 1963 [Jan. 12, 1962; March 8, 1962; March 9, 1962], No. 1335/63. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle has an air retaining skirt around its base comprising a plurality of separate contiguous elongated flexible elements. In one embodiment (Fig. 3), each element has a core 16 of flexible foam material and a covering 17 of hard urethane elastomer, and is bonded to an individual channel member 18 bolted to the base 12 of the vehicle. In another embodiment, each element (seen in horizontal section in Fig. 6) is of V-section urethane, reinforced by rods 25, and has its spinal edge 24 outermost. In another embodiment (Fig. 10), each member comprises a pair of rubber triangular sections bars 29, 31 reinforced by rods 35 and bonded to a backing strip 33. In another embodiment (Figs. 12 and 13), each element is of rectangular section urethane, reinforced by rods 39, 31. Adjacent elements have their long sides adjacent, and each element is unstable in bending about its narrower neutral axis, so that in striking an obstacle it twists to present a long side to the obstacle.
