Abstract

962,990. Measurement of materials by radiation. A. ABBEY. (Industrial Nucleonics Corporation). Dec. 13, 1960, No. 42894/60. Heading G1A. Also in Division H5] A mixture of (3-rays and X-rays is obtained by allowing a primary beam of #-radiation to fall on a target which intercepts part only of said beam, the target being of a material which produces X-rays on bombardment by #-radiation. Fig. 5, shows a #-radiation source 40 and a detector 12, between which is disposed a target 36 having an aperture 44 therein. The target is thick enough to absorb most (about 97%) of the #-particles, but these react with the nuclei in the target material to produce a "bremsstrahlung" beam of X-rays, represented at 42. Thus the resultant radiation is a mixture of these X-rays and part of the original #-radiation which passes unintercepted through the aperture 44. This combined radiation is particularly suitable for thickness gauge measurements on sheet material, in which the radiation passes through the material and is detected on the other side. In the embodiment shown in more detail in Fig. 7, the # emitter radioisotope is contained in a sealed capsule 56. This mounted on a flange 62 secured by screws 64, 66 in a rectangular metal block 50. Projecting from block 50 is a cylindrical portion 52, in which a deep annular groove 76 is cut; this groove is filled with lead to act as a shield. The open end of cylinder 52 is closed by the target disc 80 (corresponding to target 36 in Fig. 5), which has nine holes 86 drilled therein, arranged in the form of a square. It is desirable for the target material to have a low atomic number, a preferred material being anodized aluminium. Instead of an apertured target, a solid target or plurality of targets may be used which have a smaller area than the beam, which has the same result of a partly non-intercepted beam. In Fig. 8, (not shown) the same arrangement is modified for the reflection method of thickness gauging. Specification 794,207 is referred to.
