Abstract

Ethylene is polymerized with a catalyst comprising a mixture of (a) a transition metal compound of a Group IV, V or VI metal, (b) a silane derivative containing <FORM:0962952/C3/1> where R is phenyl or substituted phenyl and the two remaining valencies are satisfied by aromatic, cycloaliphatic or aliphatic groups or hydrogen, and (c) a siloxane containing at least one hydrogen-silicon bond. Specified catalyst components are:-(a) TiCl4, TiCl3, VCl4, VCl3, VOCl3 and a crystalline material containing Ti, Al and Cl, (b) phenyl-, diphenyl-, triphenyl-, diphenyl methyl- and phenyl dimethyl-silanes, and (c) hydropolysiloxanes such as methyl hydropolysiloxanes. Optionally a Lewis acid such as TiCl4, VCl4, AlCl3 or AlBr3 may be present. The polymerization may be in an inert hydrocarbon medium, e.g. a petrol fraction, and reaction may be terminated and catalysts removed with the aid of materials selected from alcohols, water, hydrocarbons, acids, alkalies, acetyl acetone and/or acetone. By regulating the ratio of (b) to (c) the melt viscosity of the polyethylene may be controlled, as is illustrated in the examples. Specifications 830,424, 877,050, 934,119 and 946,013 are referred to.ALSO:A catalyst for polymerizing ethylene comprises a mixture of (a) a transition metal compound of a Group IV, V or VI metal, (b) a silane derivative containing <FORM:0962952/B1-B2/1> where R is phenyl or substituted phenyl and the two remaining valencies are satisfied by aromatic, cycloaliphatic or aliphatic groups or hydrogen, and (c) a siloxane containing at least one hydrogen-silicon bond. Specified catalyst components are:-(a) TiCl4, TiCl3, VCl4, VCl3, VOCl3 and a crystalline material containing Ti, Al and Cl, (b) phenyl-, diphenyl-, triphenyl-, diphenyl methyl-, and phenyl dimethylsilanes, and (c) hydropolysiloxanes such as methyl-hydropolysiloxanes. Optionally a Lewis acid may be present, e.g. TiCl4, VCl4, AlCl3 or AlBr3. Specifications 830,424, 877,050, 934,119 and 946,013 are referred to.
