Abstract

962,817. Fibrous fabrics; lap forming. FERRO CORPORATION. Oct. 24, 1960 [June 13, 1960], No. 36396/60. Headings D1N and D1R. A method of forming fibrous mats consists in entraining dissimilar fibrous materials separately in a plurality of air streams down hollow shoots and depositing the fibrous material successively on to a movable support or conveyer, whereby a mat of superposed layers of dissimilar fibrous material is formed with the fibres of adjacent layers interlacing at random directions to form an interfacially interlaced stratified mat. Preferably the support or conveyer is in continuous motion during the deposition of the fibrous material and the hollow shoots oscillated transversely to the movement of the conveyer. Air streams containing entrained resin binder may be directed concurrently with the air streams entraining the fibrous material. The fibrous material from different shoots may differ in chemical composition or in physical texture and the rate of discharge from each shoot may be different in order to form layers of different thickness. Fibrous material forming external layers are preferably finer than that forming an internal layer or layers e.g. glass and jute fibres. Preferred apparatus for performing the above method is shown in Fig. 1 and consists generally of a strand supply and chopping section 1 and a mat forming section 2. Continuous strands 4 of fibrous material are fed from balls 3 to cutting zones 13 and are thence induced to flow downwardly by gravity through hollow bearings 16 aided by currents of air from blowers 15, directed through ducts 17,flexible hoses 18 and finally through hollow shoots A, B, C. The air currents entrain the chopped fibrous material and expels them in a cascade on to the movable conveyer 20 to form a mat 26. The shoots A, B, C are arranged in tandem and there is mounted on and parallel with each shoot, tubes 24 for distributing powdered resin binder 25 simultaneously concurrently with the chopped strands 4a. The powdered resin is continuously supplied by gravity from hoppers 42 via. flexible tubes 43 and another flexible hose 44 provides air from blower 15 to aid distribution of the resin binder through tube 24. A suction box 27 is provided under the upper run of the conveyer to increase the compacting of the mat. Additional bonding material is added from trough 32 and the mat is sprayed with liquid e.g. water from sprays 34, 35 to further compact the mat before it passes into curing oven 38.
