[Also - in Division B3] Apparatus for determining when a shaving cutter 16 (Fig. 2) is just touching a gear-wheel comprises a pair of resistance strain gauges 13 mounted on the tool carrying spindle 11 and connected via slip rings to a wheatstone bridge circuit, vhereby the additional strain on the spindle produced when the shaver touches the gear-wheel is indicated by the bridge unbalance. The strain gauges may alternatively be mounted on the tool head 17. The bridge output may also be used to indicate the eccentricity of a gear-wheel.
