Abstract
The invention comprises the compounds of formula: <FORM:0962121/C1/1> where each X, X1 and X11 is H, Cl, Br, or a substitute or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group containing not more than 10 carbon atoms, the broken lines indicating that th 1,4-methane bridge or the 2,3-or 6,7-double bonds may each be present or replaced by a pair of hydrogen atoms; and their production by epoxidising a compound: <FORM:0962121/C1/2> e.g. with H2O2 in the presence of a water-soluble alkaline material such as Na2CO3. Specified organic substituents are C1- 6 alkyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, methylcyclohexyl, dimethylcyclooctyl, 3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexyl, phenyl, methylphenyl, ethylphenyl, benzyl, phenethyl, allyl, crotyl, butadienyl, pentadienyl, vinylphenyl, allylphenyl, phenylvinyl, phenylcrotyl and phenylallyl; suitable substituents for these are halogen, cyano and nitro. The compounds of the invention are biocidally active (see Division A5). Starting materials may be prepared by the processes: <FORM:0962121/C1/3> <FORM:0962121/C1/4> followed by chlorination or bromination; <FORM:0962121/C1/5> or by similar reactions with a suitable acyclic diene; a suitable starting material is also obtained by the process:- <FORM:0962121/C1/6> Compounds in which the bridged ring is saturated may be obtained by hydrogenation of the 2, 3-unsaturated starting materials.ALSO:Bioxidally active compositions contain a compound <FORM:0962121/A5-A6/1> where each X, X1 and X11 is H, Cl, Br or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group (specified substituents being halogen, cyano and nitro) containing not more than 10 carbon atoms, the broken lines indicating that the 1,4-methano bridge or the 2,3- or 6,7-double bonds may each be present or replaced by a pair of hydrogen atoms (see Division C2) together with a liquid or solid diluent and/or a wetting agent. These compositions are active against fungi and bacteria. Suitable diluents are vegetable oils such as castor oil, low-boiling solvents such as carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, hydrogenated naphthalene, alkylated naphthalene, solvent naphtha; petroleum oils, xylene; tricalcium phosphate, chalk, bentonite, kaolin, kieselguhr. Suitable wetting agents are specified. Heavy hydrocarbon oils, other fungicidal, viricidal, insecticidal or acaricidal materials, plant nutritives, plant hormones, and materials which suppress phytotoxic action, such as glucose, may be present.
