Abstract

961,873. Recording-apparatus; detecting radio-activity; recording courses and contours. C. R. CARPENTER. Oct. 27, 1961, No. 38453/61. Headings G1A, G1F and G1J. [Also in Division F2] Recording-apparatus is mounted on a land vehicle whose ground-engaging wheels 1 drive through the vehicle transmission 2, gear boxes 6, 14 and flexible cables 8, 12, 16, a course recorder 50 and also drive, through a cable 18, the record strip 25 of apparatus 24 with a pen 24b recording a graph 25a of the intensity of gamma radiation detected by a crystal 34 connected to the scintillation counter 32. A vehicle thus equipped may be used to survey an area for the purpose of locating oil pools as it has been found that they give'a characteristic "isorad" map. The area is traversed by the vehicle along parallel lines producing the record 70 of its course with the width of the strips related to the cone angle of the detector 34 adjusted by raising or lowering the lead shield 36, Fig. 5. A gear ratio is chosen in mechanism 22 in the drive to the record strip 25 to make the scale of recording in apparatus 24 correspond to the scale of the course recorder 50. When the tranverse is finished the strip 25 is cut into lengths corresponding to the strips plotted on the sheet 72 and these lengths are appliqued to the sheet 72, Fig. 2. The "isorads" are then drawn by joining the points representing places of equal radiation intensity. An altimeter 40 may control a pen 26b to record height above sea-level on a record strip 27 moving with or integral with strip 24. The graphs 25a, 27a may be differently coloured and if one or both strips 25, 27 are transparent the lengths thereof corresponding to the strips traversed may both be appliqued to the same sheet 72 and isorads and contour lines may be drawn in further colours: Shock absorbers (Fig. 4 not shown) may be placed below and, if required, above and at the sides of the different units to reduce vibration.
