Abstract

<PICT:0961051/C1/1> Compacted sodium carbonate with a bulk density of 0.8-1.6 kg/l. is produced by first removing trapped gases from calcined Na2CO3 produced by the ammonia-soda process and then compressing by mechanical pressure at 100-5,000 kg/cm.2. The removal of trapped gases may be accompanied by an initial compression of less than 100 kg/cm.2 by mechanical pressure. H2O, e.g. 1/2 -2 mols/mol. Na2CO3 sprayed or as steam, soda lye, Na2SO4, Na salts of aliphatic fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters may be introduced during compression. A roller type furnace R calcines Na2CO3 which is passed at 363-393 DEG K. by conveyers C to funnel 1, via vibrating feeders 2 to profiled roller 3, is compressed at less than 100 kg/cm.2 by briquetting apparatus 4 and fed to cooling funnel 5. The de-aerated Na2CO3 is fed to diagonal or triangular profiled rollers 6 where it is shaped and pressed. The Na2CO3 is crushed and fed via collector 7 to screening drum 8 which grades it into fine, medium e.g. 0.2-1.5 mm., and coarse into bins 9. The fine grade may be returned via worm feeds 10 and 13 and conveyer 12 to the input, while the coarse grade may be re-screened and passed down pipe 11 to funnel 5.
