Abstract
Monocarboxylic acids prepared by reacting an olefin with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a catalyst comprising phosphoric acid, boron trifluoride and water, or boron trifluoride and water, are purified by treatment with a compound forming a complex with any metal compounds present, washing with aqueous alkaline solutions and then distilling. The complexing and washing may be in either order, or simultaneous. Preferred complexing agents are di- or poly-basic acids, such as oxalic, tartaric, or citric acids, possibly in admixture with mineral acids, but may also be hydroxy acids, e.g. gluconic, amino acids e.g. glycocoll, nitrilotriacetic acid, or ethylene diamine tetracetic acid, alkali metal salts of these acids, acetylacetone and derivatives thereof, e.g. thienoyl trifluoroacetone, and dithizone. The aqueous alkali preferably has a pH of less than 8.5. The example illustrates the purification of acids prepared from a thermally cracked paraffinic feedstock, with comparative experiments describing the purification by distillation alone, and by washing with alkali and then distilling.
