Abstract

Finely-divided oxidic nickel-iron ores are first treated to reduce the nickel and a part of the iron and to simultaneously sulphidize the nickel, the reaction being carried out essentially by a mixture of reducing and sulphur-containing gases which may be produced inside or outside the reaction vessel. The treated ore is then smelted to yield a matte from which nickel may be obtained by conventional means. The gas mixture for the first stage may be obtained by controlled combustion of high-sulphur fuels possibly augmented by the addition of sulphurous gases from the nickel extraction stage. The matte is preferably first blown to slag off iron, the slag being returned to the matte smelting stage. After iron removal cobalt may be removed by blowing the melt while retaining a sulphur content of at least 3%. Nickel may then be obtained by the process disclosed in Specification 960,698.
