Abstract

960,562. Capacitors. TELEGRAPH CONDENSER CO. Ltd. (Sprague Electric Co.). Jan. 18, 1963, No. 2221/63. Heading H1M. A round or flat self-heating capacitor comprises two electrodes separated by a non- porous plastic film, at least one such electrode being of porous material metallized on both faces and the combination being impregnated with a dielectric resin material subsequently solidified in situ. In Fig. 1, the electrodes each comprise a porous base 1, e.g. kraft or other paper, metallized on both sides and one end at 2, with an un-metallized margin 3 on each side at the other end and arranged with the metallized ends alternating in position to be separated by films 4 of porous plastic dielectric material. Metal plate or deposit electrodes 5 at each end, contacting the corresponding metallized electrodes provide terminals. The assembly may be flat or rolled, alternate electrodes only may be porous based, or the porous electrode bases may be metallized over their entire surfaces; the electrodes being staggered in location to extend alternately for connection on each side of the assembly. Thereafter the structure is impregnated with a dielectric material e.g. a polymerizable resin subsequently setting to a solid, in situ. In a modification (Fig. 4) an electrode of lamellar construction comprises a porous base 1 covered by a metallized layer 2, while the opposed electrode 10 is of conventional foil separated by a plastic dielectric film 11; tabs 12, 13 being inserted in the assembly for connection. The porous electrode base may also be reconstituted mica paper, glass cloth, asbestos, or a porous resin film e.g. porous P.T.F.E. The dielectric film may be of polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, cellulosic esters and ethers e.g. cellulose acetate, sorbate polyamide, or polyesters e.g. 1.4 cyclohexylene bimethylene terephthalate, polycarbonate. The metallized layer may be zinc, aluminium, silver, tin, lead, or nickel deposited by condensation, chemical deposition, or gas decomposition. The impregnant may be a polymerizable resin e.g. polyvinyl carbazole, polystyrene, or a thermosetting resin e.g. copolymerized polyvinyl toluene, polybutadiene, divinyl benzene, or alternatively mineral oil, mineral wax, silicone oil, castor oil, chlorinated diphenyl, or other chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons.
