Abstract

960,334. Vehicle independent wheel spring suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Oc 23, 1962 [Nov. 30, 1961], No. 40032/62. Headings B7D and B7H. In a vehicle with a power unit resiliently connected to the body the wheels 26, 38 are connected tc the power unit by suspension arms 42, 52 and to the body by a trans verse leaf-spring 108. In the embodiment the leaf-spring 108 is clamped by U-bolts 110 to transverse body frame member 106 anc connected to wheel supports 40, 5( by ball joints 112, 114 incorporating mountings for telescopic dampers 116, 118. The power unit, com prising engine 10 and differentia and transmission gear units 12, 14 is connected to the wheels by drive shafts 20, 30 incorporating sliding spline joints 22, 32 and is sup ported from the body frame by resilient mounts 70, 92 and 94 which permit limited vertical movement but are resistant to horizontal movement. Mounts 92 and 94 are supported from body frame members 60, 62 by brackets 84, 86 (Fig. 3), and mount 70 is supported by cross-member 66. The joints connecting the steering arms on the wheel supports 40, 50 to the steering links which are mounted at their other ends on the body are arranged in the plane of the engine mounts to reduce steering effects due to roll of the power unit.
