Abstract

960,122. Air conditioning units. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1961 [March 7, 1960], No. 6122/61. Headings F4H and F4V. [Also in Division F1] An air conditioner has a discharge duct 80, Fig. 3, which is associated with an evaporator 58, Fig. 2, and has an inlet opening 74 adjacent one end of an elongated outlet opening 123, the duct having therein an air deflector and silencer 84 constituted by vanes 94, 96, 98, 121, which are formed of foamed plastic resin and which from the duct inlet to the duct outlet are successively of increasing width and increasing projected height. A centrifugal fan wheel 50, driven by a motor 46 draws air through a section 34, of a condenser 30 past a water flinger ring 42 and through inlet 28 into the fan interior and into compartment 52, containing sealed motor compressor unit 38, from where it is discharged through the condenser section 36. An evaporator fan wheel 56, driven by motor 46, draws air through an evaporator 58 and delivers it into a scroll 72 and thence into the discharge duct 80. The air deflector and silencer 84 may be moulded from foamed polystyrene, expanded polystyrene, polystyrene beads, polyurethane, phenol formaldehyde or epoxy resins.
