Abstract
960,102. Electrostatic paint spraying. RANSBURG ELECTRO-COATING CORPORATION. June 20, 1960 [June 18, 1959], No. 21535/60. Headings B2B and B2F. An electrostatic device for coating an article with liquid material comprises an atomizing device with an exposed charging electrode at its forward end connected to an electric circuit which impresses on it a high voltage, but which is so responsive to changes in the length of the air gap between the electrode and the nearest earthed object as to appreciably reduce the potential difference therebetween as the air gap decreases. Liquid is fed to the device for atomization therefrom and charging by the electrode, which is surrounded by a shield of insulating material projecting forwardly thereof greater than the sparking distance from the electrode to the nearest earthed object, but substantially less than would be necessary if the electrical circuit were substantially unresponsive to changes of air gap. As shown, a hand-held gun comprises an insulating body portion 75 and an earthed metal grip 76 with a trigger 77 controlling the flow of liquid coating material. An annular atomizing member 78 is mounted for rotation by a motor 84; it is preferably made of insulating material having a coating of very slight conductivity, and is charged to a high voltage, e.g. 80-90 kV, by a source 81 through resistors 79 and 80, of about 500 megohms each, and a brush 87. Within the member 78 is an inner electrode 82 of insulating material having a slightly conductive coating; this is maintained at an intermediate voltage by leakage current from the member 78 which develops a potential difference across a resistor 83, e.g. of about 10,000 megohms, one end of this resistor being connected to the electrode 82, and the other earthed through the motor 84. A shield 85 of good insulating material, e.g. polyethylene, surrounds the member 78, and projects forwardly, at 85a, beyond the edge 78a, as well as rearwardly at 85b. Coating material is fed to the member 78 through a tube 86, and is atomized at the edge 78a. Specification 865,765 is referred to.
