Abstract
959,388. Photovoltaic devices. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 24, 1960], No. 36418/60. Heading H1K. An apparatus for converting solar energy into electrical energy comprises a multiplicity of interconnected photo-cells, at least some of which are disposed generally in a plane to form a plurality of rows, each device in said rows being mounted inclined to the plane to give maximum output when sunlight falls on the device at an acute angle greater than 20 degrees to the normal to said plane. Each device may consist of a silicon PN-junction wafer encapsulated in thermosetting resin. In a typical apparatus, Fig. 1, the rows are mounted on inclined slats 4. Additional rows of devices are mounted on the top panel 3 of box 2 at a different angle. In use the box is disposed so that all the cells face directly into the sun at mid-day. Specification 955,595 is referred to.
