Magnetic dots are manually recorded on a tape by pressing the tape and a magnetic carbon against "printing" slides. Slides 96 (Fig. 13) are differentially moved by moving fingerpieces 48 (Figs. 1 and 13) until the required numbers are displayed at the bottom of the columns. Each slide is connected to its associated fingerpiece by an arm 104 and a lug and slot connection 105, 106. A pawl 138 holds a slide set against the action of a spring 132. Other printing slides are set by the insertion of two cards 42, 44 which have sets of upstanding lugs which engage the ratchets and move the slides the required distance. The cards are so shaped that printing is prevented unless they have been properly inserted. There is a clear button 56 which rocks an arm which releases the pawls 138 in case of error. The printing operation is caused by sliding a knob 54 to the end of a slot 55 and back again. Full-stroke mechanism is provided. The knob 54 is supported on a carriage to which are attached cables which reciprocate an eccentrically mounted wheel across the printing area. On the upstroke of knob 54 the wheel 66 (Fig. 24) is moved to the left and is rotated against the action of a spring by the engagement of arm 305 with catch 300. Printing takes place during this movement. On the return stroke of knob 54, catch 300 is released and arm 305 engages a lever 116 which is rocked to grip the record and carbon tapes against a wheel 325 and advance them.
