Abstract

A fire resistant board material consists mainly of water laid felted mineral fibres-but not asbestos fibres-bound together by an organic binder, and has a density of between 0.5 and 1.1 grams per cubic centimetre, with the fibres being in a condition of elastic compression. The mineral materials may be stone, slag or glass. As described mineral fibre wool, potato starch, zinc stearate and water are continously fed to a hydropulper with the pH of the suspension adjusted to by adding alum. The suspension passes through a perforated plate in the hydropulper to a wet machine. The wet matt thus formed is cut and then subjected to a pressure of about 6-8 kg/cm2. Alternatively the suspension may comprise mineral fibres and potato flow, with an aqueous solution of urea resise being added to the surface of the wet matt. A filler-for example kaolin-may be used.
