Abstract

958,164. Charging metal melting furnaces. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 30, 1963 [May 14, 1962], No. 18427/62. Heading F4B. A method of charging material through an opening in a furnace, converter or the like comprises positioning the open end of a first discharge box adjacent the opening and discharging at least one further box through the opening via the first box. The apparatus comprises three charging boxes mounted on a common frame 41, the central box 14 having an open end nearest the converter mouth 31, the outer two boxes 51 being closed at both ends. Each outer box is connected by brackets 54 to a shaft 52 substantially parallel to the upper edges of the central box which is rotatably supported by uprights and brackets 53<SP>1</SP>. At the end of each shaft a pinion wheel 55 is mounted which mates with a rack 56 connected to a rod 57 of an hydraulic cylinder 58. The frame 41 is pivotally secured by a shaft 42 mounted in ends 59 to a cradle 15 and is rotated about the axis of this shaft by hydraulic rams 43, 45. The box 14 is also hinged to the shaft 42 and is rotated about its axis beyond the frame 41 by the hydraulic ram 62, 63. The cradle 15 is carried on four pairs of articulate flanged rollers 35 on the chassis 12 mounted on rail wheels 13 of a scrap charging car and is moved from the normal position during movement 15<SP>1</SP> to the discharging position 15 by an hydraulic ram 37, 39. Having positioned the opening in the box 14 adjacent the converter mouth 31, the boxes are discharged by tilting the frame 41, further tilting the box 14 to discharge the material therein, returning the box 14 to the frame 41, rotating an outer box 51 to discharge into the box 14 which is again further tilted, returning the boxes to their previous position and repeating the process with the second box 51. A second frame 41 with boxes 14, 51 may be provided and loading may be carried out by straight crane lifts. Specification 946,145 is referred to.
