The invention relates to a sparking plug comprising an auxiliary spark gap and a capacitor located within the plug. The introduction of a capacitor in parallel with the auxiliary gap is effected by inserting a suitable dieletric 15 in the gap comprising electrodes 16, 17. The dielectric 15 may be constituted by a plug or pellet of ceramic material such as Barium Titanate or Lead Zirconate the ends of which are silvered or coated with other suitable material. The electrodes may be of aluminium. In Fig. 4 the ends of the pellet 15 are enclosed within and connected to shallow caps 29. The caps may be of stainless steel or nickel and may be brazed to the metalised ends of the pellet or may be of tinplate or tinplated copper and soldered to the silvered ends of the pellet. Many further details are given in the Specification. The invention is described applied to sparking plugs of the kind in which sparking is effected across a gap partly of surface discharge type and partly of air for example consistent with Specification 947,427 but may be utilised with spark plugs which are solely of the surface discharge type or with plugs wherein sparking is effected solely across one or more air gaps.
